SEA KAYAKING THE NORTH CAROLINA COAST

The Pamlico Sea Base Sea Kayaking program affords a premiere high adventure experience. The unique design of a sea kayak allows participants to paddle into locations that are inaccessible to canoes or other larger craft. In addition, the sleek design of sea kayaks enable them to glide through wind and waves with minimal resistance allowing paddlers to travel greater distances in a shorter period of time.

Throughout the course of a week your group will carry all of you food and supplies need in your kayaks. A Sea Base staff guide will instruct the crew members in advanced outdoor skills such as wilderness cookery and low impact - no trace camping, just to name a few. They will also learn skills essential for sea kayak safety such as paddling techniques, self-rescues, group rescues, navigation, and much, much more. The crew will gain insight into the rich history of the North Carolina coastline through visits to Harkers Island, Cape Lookout, Portsmouth Village, Ocracoke Village and much more.

Our program is unique in that it combines the surprising mobility of these boats with the natural beauty of the Outer Banks. Traveling where few are able to go, crewmembers will have access to almost 80 miles of untouched or deserted beaches along the Cape Lookout National Seashore and Crystal Coast of North Carolina.

We do not require any prior experience or training as a prerequisite to attending a kayak trek. Upon arrival your designated staff guide with provide you with kayak instruction. This program is open to all who wish to discover a unique and challenging high adventure program for Scouting.

Groups can choose from two different treks. A 1 week trek and a 9 day trek.
1 Week Trek: The one-week trek is on the same timetable as a typical resident camp. Groups will check in and begin instruction on Sunday and check out on the following Saturday. Actual paddling days will be from Monday through Friday. This allows your unit to travel together with younger scouts who are interested in resident camp at the adjacent Camp Bonner.

9 Day Trek: the 9 day trek is an extended version of the seven day program. Participants will check in on Friday afternoon, paddle from Saturday to the next Friday, and checkout on Saturday morning. The flexibility of a nine day schedule may allow for groups to participate in more local program activities including deep sea and surf fishing or to cover the same ground at a less rigorous pace. Only one 9 day trek will be operating at a time.
